People often describe depression as a dark cloud that comes over their life and blocks the sun. We all experience feeling down at times; however, depression is persistent and can feel debilitating. Depression is characterized by a low mood most of the day, nearly every day. When we are in this state, we often experience a loss of interest in what once brought us pleasure.


Depression is characterized by the following symptoms:


● Feeling sad or hopeless the majority of the time

● Loss of pleasure in most activities

● Lack of energy or motivation

● Significant weight loss or weight gain

● Inability to focus or make decisions

● Feelings of worthlessness

● Extreme feelings of guilt

● Thoughts about death and/or suicide


These symptoms range in duration and intensity. Depression is an extremely common condition. According to the National Institute of Mental Health's research in 2017, an estimated 17.3 million adults had at least one major depressive episode. This number represented 7.1% of all U.S. adults.


Depression is treatable and you deserve support. Medication is sometimes used in combination with therapy to alleviate certain symptoms. Therapy helps to uncover and replace negative thought patterns. Therapy offers you insight into what caused this pain and tools to prevent future depressive episodes.
